Jose Abreu a unanimous choice as 2014 AL Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year

Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox was the ninth player to win the AL award by a unanimous vote. The others: Carlton Fisk, Mark McGwire, Sandy Alomar Jr., Tim Salmon, Derek Jeter, Nomar Garciaparra, Evan Longoria, Mike Trout. There have been 10 unanimous winners in the National League. Abreu was the seventh first baseman honored in the AL. The others: Walt Dropo, Chris Chambliss, Mike Hargrove, Eddie Murray, Alvin Davis, Mark McGwire. There have been seven first-base winners in the NL. Abreu was the sixth White Sox player to win the award. The others: Luis Aparicio, Gary Peters, Tommie Agee, Ron Kittle, Ozzie Guillen. Abreu was the only player named to every ballot.

It marked the second consecutive year that a Cuban-born player was honored and the fourth time overall. Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was the NL winner in 2013. Other Cuban-born Rookie of the Year winners: Tony Oliva and Jose Canseco.

Ballots from two writers in each league city prior to postseason play are tabulated on a system that rewards five points for first place, three points for second place and one point for third place.
