Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes won the National League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award.
Only four players received votes, the fewest in National League Rookie of the Year voting since the BBWAA went to a three-player ballot in 1980. The previous low had been five, in 2001 when Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals won the election and 1998 when Kerry Wood of the Chicago Cubs was the winner. The all-time low total of players to receive votes was three in the American League election of 1983 won by Ron Kittle of the Chicago White Sox.
Skenes is only the second Pirates winner of this award. The only other was outfielder Jason Bay in 2004 when the Pirates became the last pre-expansion franchise with a Rookie of the Year winner.
Skenes, the 24th pitcher to win the NL Rookie of the Year Award, and Jackson Merrill of the Padres were named on all ballots.
Ballots were cast prior to postseason play. They are tabulated on a system that rewards five points for first place, three points for second place and one point for third place.
